Ortho-K lenses are designed to gently reshape the front surface of the eye while you sleep. When worn consistently overnight, they can help provide clear vision during the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses. If you stop wearing Ortho-K lenses, the cornea gradually begins to return to its original shape. This means the vision correction effect is temporary and depends on regular lens wear. One of the first changes you may notice after stopping Ortho-K is that your daytime vision becomes less clear. Some patients notice mild blur after missing one night, while others may still see well for a short time. The exact timing depends on your prescription, your corneal shape, and how long you have been wearing Ortho-K. As the reshaping effect fades, nearsightedness or astigmatism can return. You may need glasses or soft contact lenses again if you decide not to continue treatment. For many patients, the cornea begins changing back within a few days. In some cases, it may take longer for vision to fully return to its original prescription. This is why we do not recommend stopping Ortho-K without speaking with our eye doctor first, especially if you rely on clear vision for school, work, driving, or sports. If you are preparing for a new eye exam, LASIK consultation, or a change in contact lens type, we may recommend a specific break from Ortho-K so your eyes can stabilize before measurements are taken. For children and teens using Ortho-K as part of myopia management, stopping treatment may also affect the long-term plan for slowing nearsightedness progression. Ortho-K can be a helpful option for managing myopia, but consistency and follow-up care are important. If your child stops wearing Ortho-K lenses, we may discuss other myopia control options, such as MiSight contact lenses or other approaches based on their age, prescription, eye health, and lifestyle. If you stop Ortho-K or miss several nights of wear, contact us if you notice: If your lenses have been sitting unused, do not simply restart them without checking that they are clean, undamaged, and still appropriate for your eyes. Lens fit can change, prescriptions can shift, and improper wear may increase the risk of irritation or infection. At Contact Lens Institute of Delaware, we take a careful approach to Ortho-K fittings and follow-up care. We can evaluate your eyes, confirm whether your lenses still fit properly, and help you decide whether continuing Ortho-K is the best option.
